According to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Derrick O'Meara, who is the Director of the Oneida County Child Advocacy Center, a 22 year old female and a 25 year old male have been arrested for endangering the welfare of a 2 year old child in the City of Rome. The 25 year old male and father to the victim, Michael J. Swisloski Jr., and 22 year old female, Italia B. Gonzalez, had the child in their custody between Friday, June 6, 2025, and Monday, June 9, 2025.When the child was returned to his biological mother on Monday, he was found to have extensive injuries to his face, leg, head, and throat, that were not present the previous Friday when he left her care. The Child Advocacy Center was initially notified about this incident by the Wynn Hospital in Utica, New York.Detective Alexis Perry of the City of Rome Police Department, who is assigned to the Child Advocacy Center, was assigned to this case. The investigation revealed that the injuries sustained by the 2 year old, were determined to be consistent with child abuse, specifically the injuries to the inside of his throat, which were deemed to be potentially life threatening. On August 19, 2025, Swisloski and Gonzalez were arrested by Detective Perry and were issued appearance tickets to appear in Rome City Court on September 10, 2025. Swisloski and Gonzalez were arraigned in Rome City Court on September 10, 2025, charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child, a Class A Misdemeanor. They were released in their own recognizance and their proceedings were adjourned pending further adjudication. An Order of Protection has been issued on behalf of the victim and services have been offered to the child through the Child Advocacy Center.
