It’s Sheriff’s Week – Support Your Local Sheriff’s Office
September 14–21, 2025, has been proclaimed Sheriff’s Week in New York State to recognize the important role of the Office of Sheriff. This week highlights the many contributions sheriffs make to county government and the statewide criminal justice system.
Across New York, 55 of the 58 sheriffs are elected officials, chosen directly by the people every four years. They are responsible for leading complex operations that can include:
Criminal law enforcement and traffic patrolEmergency rescueSecurity programsSWAT and civil emergency responseJail operations and correctional alternativesCivil litigation processes
The Office of Sheriff is the oldest local office in New York, dating back to colonial times, and has been guaranteed to the people in every State Constitution. Uniquely, the sheriff is the only law enforcement officer directly elected by and accountable to the people.
This week, we honor and celebrate the proud tradition and dedicated service of the Sheriff’s Office.
