Yesterday, Sheriff Maciol joined Onondaga County Sheriff Toby Shelly, Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter, the Madison County Sheriff Todd Hood along with Onondaga County District Attorney Bill Fitzpatrick, and Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon at a press conference in Syracuse. They came together to support NYS Senate Bill S-2282-a proposed by Senators Helming and Walczyk that would require judges to consider the risks a suspect may pose to public safety when determining pretrial custody. The Pretrial Risk Overview for Threat Evaluation, Custody, and Treatment Act, or PROTECT Act, would create a standardized risk assessment tool for judges to use for pre-trial custody decisions. This proposed bill has the full support of the NYS Sheriff’s Association.

In the afternoon, Sheriff Maciol joined Deputy Commissioner of NYS Homeland Security Terence O’Leary, NYS Police Troop D Major Kevin Reilly, and Utica Police Captain Mike Murphy at a press conference held at the NYS Homeland Security State Preparedness Training Center in Oriskany. They came together to speak out against the last minute and massive federal funding cuts that came out over the last few days and to ask for them to be restored. This critical funding is used for training, modern law enforcement technology, and equipment used by first responders all throughout the state. Sheriffs across the state are currently discussing how these cuts will impact their offices and operations.
