According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol an inmate at the Oneida County Correctional Facility has been arrested following an altercation with a Corrections Officer.
On May 16, 2026, Road Patrol Deputies responded to the Oneida County Correctional Facility for a reported assault. It was reported that a Corrections Officer had been assaulted following an altercation with an inmate within one of the housing units in the jail. It was reported that inmate Jason Johnston, age 43, of Rome, was ordered by a Corrections Officer to secure to his cell, due to being disorderly, and Johnston refused. Johnston then struck the Corrections Officer with a closed fist and struggle ensued. The Corrections Officer was able to gain control of Johnston and await response from other Correctional Officer's when Johnston was then placed in mechanical restraints and escorted to another housing unit. The Corrections Officer was then taken to the Wynn Hospital to seek treatment for minor injuries, was released later that night, and has since returned back to work.
The case was then turned over to a member of the Criminal Investigation Unit for further investigation. On June 2, 2026, Johnston was arrested and charged with one count of Attempted Assault in the Second Degree, a Class E Felony. Johnston is currently being held on other charges and was recently arrested on April 28, 2026, by a member of the Criminal Investigation Unit and charged with Assault in the Second Degree (class D Felony) stemming from an altercation with another inmate at the Correctional Facility.
Johnston was turned back over to Corrections Staff to await arraignment in CAP Court at a later time.
