Sheriff’s Office Raises More Than $6,500 For “Double Down December”

Yesterday, the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office sent more than $6,500 in donations to several members of the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office located in Asheville, North Carolina who’s homes were devastated during the historic floods of this past September from Hurricane Helene. The Buncombe County Deputies and Officers were on the front lines dealing with the wrath of destruction during the floods while their own homes were being swept away. The money donated by the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office came from a one month extension of “No Shave November” that previously raised $6,000 that will go to help raise funds to construct the “Better Together Center”, a new community recreation center for persons with disabilities that will be located within the Utica Center for Development and the Veteran’s Outreach Center. The one month extension into December was nicknamed “Double Down December” and the idea to raise money for the Buncombe County Deputies & Officers was proposed to the Sheriff by Office Manager Renee Beckwith.

In order to participate in these fundraising events, members of the Sheriff’s Office made a $50 donation in November to the “Better Together Center” and another $50 donation in December for the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Deputies & Officers and in return for the donation, they are allowed to grow facial hair for the months of November and December. Female employees that wanted to participate in the fundraising events were allowed to paint their fingernails any color of their choice. More that 100 members of the Sheriff’s Office participated in each of the events along with additional donations from the Oneida County Sheriff’s Law Enforcement Foundation, the DSBA Local 1249, Council 82 – NYS LEO Union, and a few community members and businesses not affiliated with the Sheriff’s Office.

“I cannot thank the men & women of the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office for the incredible participation in both of these events. Raising more than $12,000 in just two moths is truly amazing and both organizations that are the recipients of these funds are grateful for the support from our Sheriff’s Office”, according to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol.
