According to Oneida County Sheriff, Robert M. Maciol, a man, was arrested following a domestic investigation.
On December 12, 2024, Oneida County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a call for a domestic incident. During the initial investigation, it was learned that the subject, Joseph Mendoza, allegedly committed several crimes against the victim. Subsequently, Deputies attempted to locate the subject to affect an arrest. After multiple attempts, an arrest warrant was issued and the efforts to locate Mendoza continued. On multiple occasions, Mendoza fled from police. During one attempt to apprehend Mendoza, he almost hit a Deputy with his vehicle. Mendoza also fled from a neighboring police agency, placing himself and the public in danger.
On January 15, 2025, Mendoza was the subject of a mental hygiene law complaint, after he made suicidal statements to a family member. Efforts were made to locate Mendoza over several hours. Ultimately, Mendoza was located and apprehended by members of the Domestic Violence Unit, Criminal Investigation Unit, Warrants Unit, and Road Patrol Division. While attempting to take Mendoza into custody, Mendoza refused to comply with lawful verbal commands. Mendoza failed to show both his hands when directed and continued to walk away from Investigators. Due to previous law enforcement interactions with Mendoza, his suicidal statements, and his history of fleeing, a Taser was deployed to aid in the effectuation of his arrest.
Mendoza was charged with criminal contempt 1st, criminal contempt 2nd, aggravated harassment 2nd, stalking 4th, harassment 2nd, and aggravated family offense. Mendoza was also charged with obstructing governmental administration and reckless endangerment for his actions while he fled from Deputies previously.
Mendoza was transported to the Oneida County Sheriff's Office Law Enforcement Building to be processed. Mendoza received a medical evaluation related to the Taser deployment and was found to have no injuries. Mendoza was turned over to the Oneida County Jail, to await Centralized Arraignment.
