The weather is getting warmer and motorcycles are emerging from winter hibernation. Before riders hit the road, and as part of May being designated nationally as "Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month" the Oneida County Sheriff's Office teamed up with local law enforcement, the NYS Sheriff's Association, and the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee for a press conference held this morning at Harley Davidson of Utica located on Commercial Drive in New York Mills.

Joining the Sheriff's Office at today's event were Boonville Police Chief Dave Olney who also serves as Chairman of the Oneida County Law Enforcement Coalition, New Hartford Patrolman Alex Palmer who is part of the New Hartford Police Department's Motorcycle Unit, Max Carbone from Harley Davidson of Utica, and several local motorcycle enthusiasts.

The main focus of today's event was to stress the importance of making safety your top priority in an effort to reduce motorcycle accidents. With motorcyclists being 27 times more likely to die in a crash than in a passenger car accidents, it is critical for both drivers and riders to share the road responsibly and to stay alert at all times.

As part of the annual “Gear Up-Ride Smart” campaign, law enforcement is encouraging riders to make this motorcycle season safe by taking the time and necessary precautions before they get back on their bikes. Seasoned riders and novice motorcyclists alike should check their cycles to make sure they are in proper running condition. They can also brush up on the rules of the road by taking advantage of the many free motorcycle reading materials available online.

With new technologies and faster bikes, it’s vital that every rider puts safety first. Wearing the right equipment—such as a DOT-approved high-quality helmet, armored jackets and pants, gloves, high-visibility (Hi Viz) clothing, eye protection, and sturdy boots—can make all the difference in an accident.

Modern gear now includes smart helmets with heads-up displays and built-in communication, as well as advanced protective clothing made from cutting-edge materials that offer both comfort and impact resistance. Remember, your gear is your first line of defense.

Lastly, always observe all traffic laws - especially the speed limit - and if you drink, don't ride; if you're riding, don't drink.

Let’s make this year the safest yet by committing to responsible riding and proper equipment every time we hit the road.

Thank you and ride safe!
