According to Sheriff Robert M.
According to Sheriff Robert M. Maciol, on 12/30/2024 at approximately 3:10 AM, a Deputy Sheriff while on patrol, came across a residential structure fire on Route 5 in the T/Vernon. Upon the deputy’s arrival, the structure fire was fully involved, and no occupants were located outside of the residence. Numerous fire departments were then dispatched and the deputy attempted to call out any occupants from the residence but was unsuccessful. Upon the fire departments’ arrival, the fire was extinguished, and an investigation was commenced by the criminal investigation unit. During the investigation that was conducted in conjunction with State Fire, and the local fire departments, one occupant was located inside of the residence deceased. The identity of the victim will be released upon positive identification and next of kin notification. The cause of the fire is still being investigated but does not appear to be suspicious at this time.
The Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by NY State Fire, the Vernon Fire Department, Vernon Center Fire Department, Verona Fire Department, Sherill Fire Department, Oneida Castle Fire Department, Clinton Fire Department, Oriskany Falls Fire Department, Westmoreland Fire Department, Clarks Mills Fire Department, and Oriskany Fire Department.
